Istorinė analizė tarptautinių santykių studijose ilgą laiką buvo svarbiausia. Iki 20 a. pr. tarptautiniai santykiai nelaikyti atskira disciplina, tai, kas šiandien laikoma tarptautiniais santykiais, buvo dėstoma ir studijuojama kaip diplomatijos istorija. Istorinės studijos svarbios ir šiandien; greta jų plačiai taikomi ir kiti tarptautinių santykių studijų metodai.
